Canadian Public Investors Target European Assets

Canadian public investors are building inroads into Europe, while other foreign investors remain somewhat cautious. Valuations in European companies have been depressed due to the overall economic environment in the region. Canada’s dollar remains somewhat resilient, making buying opportunities appear more attractive. Brave investors like the CPPIB and OMERS see the opportunity in Europe. European financial institutions are being forced to improve their capital ratios making them sell assets to shore up cash.

Canada’s large pension investors have been participating in direct investments and buyout strategies in the Europe. Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan (OTPP) manages around $117 billion in assets; they are expanding their seven-person deal team in London.
