Microbiome Biology Tech Attracts Silicon Valley Venture Capitalists

San Francisco-based Whole Biome, Inc. an evidence-based microbiome company, raised US$ 35 million in Series B funding. The round was led by existing investor Sequoia Capital with repeat participation from True Ventures, Khosla Ventures, Mayo Foundation, AME Cloud Ventures, and others. This brings the company’s total funding to US$ 57 million. Sequoia Partner Roelof Botha has joined the company’s board of directors. These investors are taking a bet on microbiome biology technologies.

Whole Biome plans to use the new funds to advance the commercialization of its first patented product, expand its discovery pipeline and scale clinical trials for their novel microbiome interventions.

Colleen Cutcliffe is a co-founder of the firm Whole Biome. Before this venture, she spent around four years at Pacific Biosciences, working in enzyme discoveries, and three years at Elan Pharmaceuticals. One of the other co-founders of Whole Biome is John Eid, who also worked as a scientist at Pacific Biosciences. James Bullard is another co-founder of the company and also worked as a scientist at Pacific Biosciences.
