In 1907, the State Legislature passed the Retirement of Public School Teachers Act providing for the organization of teacher retirement associations. In 1908, Salt Lake City created the Teachers’ Retirement System. Then in 1919, the first statewide pension plan was enacted, covering all full-time paid firefighters and volunteer firefighters.
In 1959, the Utah State Public Employees’ Association was formed with the intent to produce a comprehensive plan for a statewide public employee retirement system.
In 1967, heretofore separate school and public retirement systems were consolidated into a single Utah State Retirement System
At the beginning of January 2015, Utah Retirement Systems added a series of custom target-date funds to the lineup of its defined contribution plans.
