Wealth Fund Goes With Smart Beta, Industry Expands

Alternative indexing strategies are gaining in popularity among institutional investors such as pensions and sovereign funds. Whether the term is called “smart beta”, “alternative beta” or even “strategic beta”, asset owners such as sovereign wealth funds like the Alaska Permanent Fund have been exploring low-cost factor investing.

TOBAM and WisdomTree Expand in Europe

Paris-based TOBAM, an asset manager that utilizes smart beta strategies, is marketing seven strategies toward investors in Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Finland, Netherlands and Belgium. In the last three months starting in March, TOBAM boosted assets under management in its anti-benchmark funds by US$ 2.1 billion.

In March, WisdomTree launched its European UCITS ETF platform in Switzerland, with six funds listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange. Some of these ETFs will allow investors exposure to large and small-cap European, U.S. and emerging markets equities.
