The University of Chicago’s endowment ended FY23 at $10 billion, as of June 30, 2023. There was a 3.3% return on investments. This differs from The University of Chicago’s performance in fiscal year 2022 when the fund was valued at US$ 10.3 billion, with a –8.8% return on investments. The reason for the disappointment in 2022 was “An unusual point in history where stocks and bonds were in bear markets at the same time.” The endowment funds 17% of the university’s operating budget. There are programs from the college in 48 countries.

Annual endowment figures reflect the net impact of fundraising, investment performance and payouts, which are used for the University’s operating budget. Over 10 and 20 year time horizons, the endowment has generated annualized returns of 7.3% and 8.6% respectively. The majority of the University’s endowment is legally restricted and must be used for designated purposes. Over the last decade, the University has supported several critical strategic investments, including financial aid for undergraduate students and expanded support for faculty and graduate students.
