As more wealth funds and pensions allocate capital toward infrastructure, sustainability factors are being sprinkled in by a number of asset owner advocates. Many investors feel infrastructure and sustainability are related. Some examples are smart grids, low-carbon transport systems, waste management systems and battery storage. The investor group consisting of: California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS), PGGM, ATP, Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo), Mirova, Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan (OTPP), APG Asset Management and Aviva Investors, have launched a global sustainability benchmark for infrastructure assets. This index is called GRESB Infrastructure. GRESB stands for Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark. Netherlands-based GRESB B.V. is an industry organization that scores sustainability performance of real estate portfolios. GRESB is a subsidiary of the non-profit corporation Green Business Certification Inc.

The first assessments under the GRESB Infrastructure framework are expected in the first quarter of 2016.
