WSJ Reports DOJ Opened Antitrust Investigation Over 4 Major Automakers

Posted on 09/06/2019

The Wall Street Journal reports that the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) opened an antitrust inquiry into Ford Motor Company, Volkswagen, Honda Motors, and BMW to see if the automakers “violated federal competition law by agreeing with each other to follow tailpipe-emissions standards beyond those proposed by the Trump administration.”

Ford Motor, BMW, and Honda, confirmed to the media that they have been contacted about the DOJ inquiry.

Automobile manufacturers in the U.S. operate in a highly-regulated industry. Automakers are seeking to avoid making one set of cars for California and another set of cars for the rest of the United States, thus incurring higher operating costs. California’s emission rules differ from federal guidelines; however, California is the most populous state in the United States.
