Brexit Day as UK Seeks Fresh Start with European Union

Posted on 01/31/2020

Approved by voters, the United Kingdom is formally leaving the European Union (EU) in a move to secure more rights for its citizens, but also upending an economic and social alliance with its continental peers. The intense political infighting within Britain is coming to an end of Brexit, which saw the exodus of two prime ministers. The 2016 vote to exit the EU in a referendum highlighted the failures of supranational government and gave way to nationalist/populist tendencies.

Britain will formally leave the EU at 11 p.m. U.K. time.

The U.K. joined the EU in 1973.
