Online Travel Giant Expedia Terminating 3,000 Jobs

Posted on 02/25/2020

Expedia Group decided to fire 12% of its workforce, or about 3,000 jobs, in a move to increase profits. Expedia Chairman Barry Diller slammed the company for being “sclerotic and bloated,” in a fourth quarter 2019 earnings call. Expedia CEO Mark Okerstorm and CFO Alan Pickerill stepped down in December 2019 after dismal results for the year. About 500 people will be terminated in Seattle.

Expedia executives sent an email announcing these changes. Expedia also plans to cull costs by reducing the usage of vendors and contractors.

Expedia website properties include: Expedia.com, CarRentals.com, HomeAway, Hotels.com, Hotwire.com, Orbitz, Travelocity, trivago, Venere.com, and vrbo.

Barry Diller made his inaugural investment in Expedia in 2001 and remains the company’s chairman.
