CULTURE: Thought Police at Twitter Brings Back Zero Hedge after Admitting Error

Posted on 06/14/2020

In January 2020, social media firm Twitter banned popular financial website Zero Hedge (ZeroHedge) over posting an article that a Chinese scientist at the Wuhan lab might be the cause to blame for the coronavirus pandemic. Twitter accused Zero Hedge of violating its “rules against abuse and harassment.” At the time, the ZeroHedge twitter account had roughly 670,000 followers. Twitter came under fire for its selective enforcement of social media policies that often target right-political and libertarian spectrum figures and websites.

Many news websites are somewhat dependent on traffic from Twitter.

In June 2020, Twitter reinstated the account for Zero Hedge. Twitter disclosed its decision to suspend the account for “platform manipulation” earlier this year was a mistake. Twitter said that the post Zero Hedge used did not dox the scientist, but rather used publicly available information in its report.
