President Trump Signs Series of Executive Orders for Coronavirus Relief

Posted on 08/10/2020

U.S. President Donald Trump signed a series of executive orders to provide relief for Americans during the coronavirus lockdowns imposed by various states within the union. The president’s four orders extend unemployment benefits, provide a payroll tax holiday, defer student loan payments through 2020, and extend the federal moratorium on evictions. After weeks of failed political negotiations, Trump grew frustrated in Congress for not having coronavirus relief legislation ready for him to sign.

President Trump enacted an extension of federally-enhanced unemployment benefits that will mandate states to commit 25% of the US$ 400 per individual bump.

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi signaled a willingness to consider a narrower relief deal. Pelosi believes Trump’s executive orders are unconstitutional. Earlier, Speaker Pelosi led the charge to impeach the U.S. President in 2019 over Trump’s phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. The plan to ouster Trump failed in the Senate.
