Activist Investor Trian Snags Positions in Invesco and Janus Henderson

Activist hedge fund Trian Fund Management, L.P. purchased a 9.9% stake in Invesco Ltd. and a 9.9% stake in Janus Henderson Group Plc. The two positions are totaling roughly US$ 900 million. Trian Fund Management sees a trend of asset manager consolidation for the industry. Competitive pressures are forcing asset managers to look at mergers, while shedding costs.

Janus Henderson had US$ 336.7 billion in assets under management as of June 30, 2020. Invesco had US$ 1.15 trillion in assets under management as of June 30, 2020.

Executives at Trian Fund Management were on the board of Legg Mason when it was bought out by Franklin Resources, which owns Franklin Templeton.
