British Prime Minister Boris Johnson Imposes National Lockdown in England over New COVID Variant

U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson declared England is adopting a national lockdown over a variant of COVID-19, that is more contagious. Secondary and colleges will move to remote learning in most cases. To date, the U.K. has recorded over 2.6 million cases of COVID-19 and more than 75,000 related deaths, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. NHS capacity may be overwhelmed within 21 days if the lockdown actions are not taken, according to the UK’s chief medical officers. PM Boris Johnson says the “pace of vaccination is accelerating” thanks to the arrival of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine. Johnson claims the UK has so far “vaccinated more people than in the rest of Europe combined.”

First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon announced a new stay-at-home order for the country’s populace from midnight.
