Coal India Reveals New Mining Projects

Coal India Limited is an Indian public sector coal mining and refining company headquartered in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. Coal India recently approved as many as 32 new coal mining projects worth a total investment of US$ 6.4 billion. 24 of the 32 projects will be for the expansion of existing operations, while eight will be greenfield projects. Coal accounts for around 70% of India’s energy composition.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, in 2020, U.S. coal exports declined to 69 million metric short tons, a 26% decrease from 93 metric short tons in 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic slowed global demand for coal, and some U.S. coal mines were idled for extended periods to slow the spread of the virus.
