Sports Celebrities Back NFT Company Dapper Labs

Dapper Labs Inc. is smiling “bigly” as the the nonfungible token (NFT) company raised US$ 305 million led by Coatue at a US$ 2.6 billion valuation. The NFT company is behind Crypto Kitties and virtual trading-card platform NBA Top Shot. Top Shot marketplace enables users to trade officially licensed basketball highlight clips called “moments.” Investors in the round include a group of former and current NBA players, headlined by Michael Jordan, Alex Caruso, Andre Iguodala, Klay Thompson, and Kevin Durant, as well as, Ashton Kutcher’s Sound Ventures, movie star Will Smith’s Dreamers VC, AG Ventures, Andreessen Horowitz, USV, rapper 2 Chainz, The Chernin Group, Version One, and Venrock.

NFTs, aka digital collectibles, are being compared to collectible cards (thin pieces of cardboard with photos on it).

Another startup Cameo, which enables fans pay for personalized videos from celebrities, raised US$ 100 million in a Series C round. E.ventures led, and was joined by GV, Amazon Alexa Fund, United Talent Agency, SoftBank Vision Fund 2, Valor Equity Partners, Counterpoint Global, and insiders Lightspeed Venture Partners, Kleiner Perkins, The Chernin Group, Origin Ventures, and Spark Capital.
