1. ByteDance Ltd.’s billionaire founder Zhang Yiming has stepped down as chairman and exits the board of directors. ByteDance owns the popular social media app TikTok.

2. Republican Glenn Youngkin, a former executive at The Carlyle Group, has defeated Democrat Terry McAuliffe in the race for Governor in Virginia, according to various calls by media organizations including NBC News, Fox News, and the Associated Press. Youngkin’s win ends a long losing streak for Virginia Republicans who have not won a statewide election win since 2009. Terry McAuliffe did not concede on election night in a bid to wait for more votes to be counted.

3. Ethiopia’s cabinet has declared a nationwide state of emergency effective immediately. Government authorities in Addis Ababa informed citizens to prepare to defend the capital and register their weapons, as fighters from the northern region of Tigray threatened to march towards the city. The Tigray People’s Liberation Front has been fighting the federal government for a year. Tigray borders Eritrea. Tigrayan fighters said they had captured the strategic towns of Dessie and Kombolcha in the neighboring Amhara region. 4. HNA Group creditors were given the green light to sell its assets after the Hainan High Court approved the multibillion dollar restructuring. Around 321 companies are on the block, which include real estate assets, financial firms, and aviation assets. Hainan’s court approved the sale of 321 of HNA Group’s companies on October 31, 2021.

5. According to the Food and Drug Administration, Dole Fresh Vegetables is recalling bags of garden salad that were sold in 10 states due to a sample that tested positive for listeria monocytogenes. Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and possible deadly infections. FDA officials have reported no illnesses associated with the recalled salads, which were sold across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia.

6. New York voters chose Democrat Eric Adams (age 61) to be the next mayor to replace outgoing NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio. Adams is currently the Brooklyn borough president and a former NY state senator. The election outcome was predictable since Democrats outnumber Republicans in New York City by a margin of around 7 to 1.
