Rishi Sunak Set to Become Next Prime Minister to Lead Britain

Rishi Sunak (age 42), the former Chancellor of the Exchequer, is set to become the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Sunak is of Indian descent and would be the first prime minister breaking the racial mold. Leading the Conservative Party, Sunak will be Britain’s third leader in seven weeks. Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson pulled out of the race.
Born in Southampton, Sunak is the son African-born Hindu parents of Punjabi Indian descent. India was at one-time under the rule of the British Empire. Sunak was elected to the House of Commons for Richmond in North Yorkshire at the 2015 general election, succeeding William Hague. In July 2022, he stood in the Conservative party leadership election to replace Boris Johnson, and lost the members’ vote to Liz Truss. Following Liz Truss’s resignation amid a government crisis, Sunak won the October 2022 Conservative Party leadership election.
