Carlyle Hires Former Goldman Sachs Executive Harvey Schwartz as CEO

Carlyle Group Inc. named Harvey M. Schwartz (age 58) as Chief Executive Officer. On February 15, 2023, Carlyle co-founder William “Bill” Conway will step down as interim CEO at that time, and will remain co-chairman.

Harvey M. Schwartz is the former President and Co-Chief Operating Officer of Goldman Sachs. Schwartz worked at Goldman up until 2018. Schwartz joined Goldman Sachs in 1997 and has had senior leadership roles, including co-head of the securities division, head of securities division sales, head of North American sales and co-head of the Americas Financing Group. David Solomon won over as a successor to Lloyd Blankfein at Goldman Sachs.

Carlyle Group has struggled to find the right CEO for succession. The unexpected resignation of Kewsong Lee over a contract dispute threw a wrench in Carlyle’s succession plans. Lee had been seeking greater control in setting strategy against the firm’s co-founders.
