Attempted Turkey Coup Unravels

On July 15, 2016, sections of the Turkish military, the “Peace at Home Council,” attempted to overthrow the Turkish government. Soldiers had stormed Turkey’s state-run broadcaster declaring martial law and that they had taken over the government. Soldiers were deployed to the streets of Ankara and Istanbul. The military told people to stay-in and not take to the street, while protesters mobbed the city streets to repel the takeover attempt. A defiant Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday made it to Istanbul to proclaim the act as treasonous. Turkish society is divided with one part being the Islamists versus the secularists.
