StoreHub Sdn Berhad, a Malaysian cloud-based point-of-sale (POS) platform that lets retailers take their business online, closed a US$ 5.1 million Series A round led by Vertex Venture Holdings, the venture capital unit of Singapore’s Temasek Holdings. A number of Asian venture capital firms also got in on the action, including Malaysia’s Cradle Seed Ventures, Tokyo-based Accord Ventures, and the Fintonia Group out of Hong Kong.

E-commerce solutions that let merchants turn their iPads into digital cash registers are already ubiquitous in places like North America, Europe, in large part due to the popularity of services like Twitter chief executive Jack Dorsey’s Square, Inc. and Canada’s Shopify. Both companies made debuts on the New York Stock Exchange in 2015. Square’s offering came two years after a final US$ 150 million Series E round that was led by Singapore’s more globally-focused GIC. For all their success, however, neither has developed much of a presence in Southeast Asia.
