HARDCORE: One Reported COVID Case in Auckland Shuts Down Entire New Zealand Country

Posted on 08/17/2021

A single COVID case has plunged the whole country of New Zealand into a snap lockdown. The one reported case of COVID-19 was in Auckland by a 58-year-old man testing positive for the virus. The entire country of New Zealand will enter a three-day Level Four lockdown from 11.59 pm August 17, 2021, while Auckland and the Coromandel Peninsula will be locked down under the rules for at least a week.

New Zealand residents will be locked in their homes for all but “essential reasons”. Businesses will be forced to close and wearing cloth or medical masks will be mandate whenever a person leaves their home. New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern urged the country to follow the rules “to the letter”.

New Zealand’s annual nominal GDP for 2020 was NZ$ 193.545 billion. Taking a very crude estimate, up to NZ$ 3.71 billion (US$ 2.6 billion) could be lost by this one case causing a country-wide shut down in GDP.

New Zealand, France, Canada, and Australia have been criticized by civil society groups of taking extreme measures to combat COVID at the expense of civil liberties.
