Hall of Fame NFL Coach John Madden Dies at 85

John Madden is a Hall of Fame coach turned broadcaster. John Madden died at the age of 85. He died unexpectedly.

John Earl Madden (April 10, 1936 – December 28, 2021).

“On behalf of the entire NFL family, we extend our condolences to Virginia, Mike, Joe and their families,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in a statement. “We all know him as the Hall of Fame coach of the Oakland Raiders and broadcaster who worked for every major network, but more than anything, he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.”

The statement continued: “Nobody loved football more than Coach. He was football. He was an incredible sounding board to me and so many others. There will never be another John Madden, and we will forever be indebted to him for all he did to make football and the NFL what it is today.”

John Madden had a decade-long stint as the coach of the Oakland Raiders starting at age 32 in 1969, making it to seven AFC title games and winning Super Bowl XI following the 1976 season. Madden led the Raiders to victory in Super Bowl XI in 1977 against the Minnesota Vikings after a 13-1 regular season. Madden generated a 103-32-7 regular-season record. Madden’s 0.759 winning percentage is the best among NFL coaches with more than 100 games. Madden amassed 16 Emmy Awards for outstanding sports analyst/personality.

John Madden retired at the age of 42 from coaching.

Madden became the face of “Madden NFL Football” in the world of video games.
