1. WILL SMITH SMACKS CHRIS ROCK AT THE OSCARS. Chris Rock was the presenter at the 94th Academy Awards. While presenting the award for Best Documentary Feature, Chris Rock made a joke at the expense of Will Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
“Jada, I love ya. G.I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see it,” Rock said with reference to Pinkett Smith’s appearance.
Will Smith walked onto the stage and slapped Chris Rock in the face.
“Wow,” said Chris Rock afterward. “Will Smith just smacked the s**t out of me.”
Soon after, Will Smith won best actor for his role in “King Richard.” Will Smith issued an apology in his tearful acceptance speech, saying, “I want to apologize to the Academy. I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees. This is a beautiful moment and I’m not crying for winning an award. It’s not about winning an award for me. It’s about being able to shine a light on all of the people.”
Chris Rock declined to file a police report.
2. LOCKING DOWN 25 MILLION PEOPLE. China embraces a zero-COVID strategy. Shanghai says it will lock down the city in two stages to carry out COVID-19 testing over a nine-day period. Government officials would divide Shanghai into two for the exercise, using the Huangpu River that passes through the city as a guide. Public transport and ride-hailing services in these areas will be suspended when they are locked down. Shanghai tallied 2,631 new asymptomatic cases, which accounted for nearly 60% of China’s total new asymptomatic cases that day.
3. Ukraine’s President Voldymyr Zelenskyy says his government is prepared to discuss adopting a neutral status as part of a peace deal with Russia. Zelenskyy sees the possibility would have to be guaranteed by third parties and put to a referendum.
